Into the Upside Down

Into the Upside Down

The Netflix subscription came to an end on June 3rd. We managed to catch up on a few shows including season 1 of Stranger Things (hence the title) with kids #1 and #2. Once again I was surprised that they slept through the night without concern — the show is rated 14 and above and they’re 9 and 8. They’re enjoying it and are big fans of Eleven. They’ve been scared enough to require me to walk them to their room, but that hasn’t stopped them from begging for the next episode.

My progress on Getting Things Done has stalled. I’ve been carrying it around with me — upstairs, downstairs, around the house — but not actually reading it. I jumped onto YouTube and found a video about keeping momentum by aiming to do just 2 minutes and going from there. Will test and see. I also ordered a jointer this week for woodworking. Interested to see what it does with all the warped pieces of wood in the garage from my failed TV stand project. Fingers crossed it will straighten things out — no pun intended. Obligatory before and after pics will be required.

Saturday was busy — a home inspection and a birthday party in the morning, then on the way home we decided to check in on the recently opened White Castles. The only one in the state no less. It’s been open over a month and we’ve had a couple of failed visits — not prepared to wait upwards of 4 hours for fast food! This time the queue was about an hour so I thought what the hell. The result? It’s just White Castles. Once back home we settled in to watch Raya and the Last Dragon on Disney+. Fun, but The Mitchells vs. The Machines got more laughs in this household.

Which was better? The kids will decide…

On the tech front, I’ve been looking at passing information between Forms and Views in K2. Forms can hold many Views — so I could have Form A with a View consisting of “Confirm” and “Cancel” buttons, but on Form B I want “Ok” displayed instead of “Confirm”. Rather than creating a new View for each Form, I can work some magic so that when Form B starts up it jiggles “Confirm” to show as “Ok”. This ticks off one part of the trinity — Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse. The trade-off is that future me has to keep this in mind and make reviewing bespoke rules part of the workflow to avoid frustration.

Rowing progress

Finally, with exercising — I had planned to move up to 20 minutes but after seeing a continual increase in my distances I’ve decided to see how far I can push it first. Once that plateaus I’ll think about increasing duration. The spike on June 3rd was trying a new technique where I didn’t fully extend my legs — the jump in distance was so big I wasn’t sure the stats were being gamed, so the following days I focused on form to ensure maximum benefit. My goal isn’t just to make the chart go up and up!

Words per minute — didn’t get to practice as much as I’d have liked this week
